2 Time in German There are two ways to tell time in German.
Standard time 24-hour clock /military time Right now, we will only learn the standard time.

3 A. To ask for the time There are two ways to ask “What time is it?”
Wie viel Uhr ist es?  What time is it? Wie spät ist es?  How late is it?

4 B. To say that it is _____ o’clock…
For example, 3:00, 6:00, etc., say: Es ist # Uhr. z.B. 4:00 = Es ist 4 Uhr. z.B. 9:00 = Es ist 9 Uhr.

5 C. To say that is ____ up to 29 minutes after the hour…
Es ist # Uhr # min. z.B. 4:19 = Es ist 4 Uhr 19. 8:29 = Es ist 8 Uhr 29. 10:05 = Es ist 10 Uhr 5.

6 D. To say that it is quarter after…
Es ist Viertel nach ____. (quarter after) z.B. 9:15 = Es ist Viertel nach 9. 7:15 = Es ist Viertel nach 7.

7 E. To say that it is a quarter till (quarter of, quarter before)…
Es ist Viertel vor ______. (quarter till) z.B. 5:45 = Es ist Viertel vor 6. 2:45 = Es ist Viertel vor 3.

8 F. To say that it is _____:30
Es ist halb # of the next hour. z.B. 6:30 = Es ist halb 7. 4:30 = Es ist halb 5. 1:30 = Es ist halb 2.

9 G. To indicate the minutes past the 30 minute mark…
Say: Es ist #of min (Minuten) vor # of next hour. z.B. 8:35 = Es ist 25 (Minuten) vor 9. 10:50 = Es ist 10 vor 11. 6:42 = Es ist 18 vor 7.

10 H. To talk about the time with 1:00…
Say: 1:00 = Es ist ein Uhr. (drop the “s” from ,,eins’’) 1:20 = Es ist ein Uhr 20. 12:45 = Es ist Viertel vor eins. or… Es ist Viertel vor ein Uhr.

11 I. Alternate ways for telling time
z.B. 1:20 = Es ist 1 Uhr OR… Es ist 20 (Minuten) nach 1. 5:06 = Es ist 5 Uhr OR… Es ist 6 (Minuten) nach 5. 10:25 = Es ist 10 Uhr OR… Es ist 25 (Minuten) nach 10. REALLY CRAZY!: 6:25 = Es ist 5 Minuten vor halb 7.

7:30 10:50 = Es ist 6 Uhr 10. = Es ist Viertel nach 8. = Es ist 9 Uhr 20. = Es ist 10 Uhr 12. = Es ist halb 8. = Es ist 10 vor 11
