2 Reflexive Pronouns The reflexive (pronoun) is used to express action to oneself or for oneself, and can be accusative or dative depending on its function. Placement of the reflexive pronoun depends on which article of speech a sentence starts with. For example: Ich rasiere mich heute morgen, bevor ich frühstücke. 4 Reflexive Verbs The following list includes a number of commonly used verbs in the reflexive. 5 Accusative Reflexive - examples
Er wäscht sich jeden Morgen. Sie schminkt sich, bevor sie zur Arbeit geht. Ich ziehe mich schick an. If we add a modal verb: Ich will mich schick anziehen. He washes himself every morning. She puts on makeup before she goes to work. I get nicely dressed. (I dress myself nicely.) I want to get nicely dressed. (I want to nicely dress myself.)

6 Reflexive Pronouns – dative
If the function of the reflexive pronoun is an indirect object then the dative case is used. If we use the following accusative reflexive example: Ich wasche mich, then the expression in English is a very general statement: “I’m getting washed” or “I wash myself”. If we want to specifically express a part of one’s body, then we use the dative. For example: Ich wasche mir die Hände. While in English, one would use the possessive adjective (my hands), the German expression uses the dative reflexive pronouns. NOTE: Use the dative reflexive pronoun when you wish to specifically express a part of the body: die Hände / die Haare / die Zähne

Er wäscht sich die Haare jeden Morgen. Sie putzt sich die Zähne, bevor sie zur Arbeit geht. Ich ziehe mir ein schickes Hemd an. Ich nehme mir ein Stück Kuchen zum Nachtisch. Herr Ziegler macht sich eine Tasse Kaffee. He washes his hair every morning. She brushes her teeth before she goes to work. I’m putting on a nice shirt. I’m getting myself a piece of cake for dessert. Mr. Ziegler makes himself a cup of coffee.
