1 New grammar topic: comparisons & superlatives
Ich bin klein. Ich bin kleiner als Ian Thorpe. Ich bin alt Ich bin älter als Joe. Das ist Bob. Bob ist schnell. Bob (schnell) John (schneller) Bob (schnell) John ist schneller . Fritz ist am schnellsten. Fritz (am schnellsten) John (schneller)

2 Rules for comparisons:
add „-er” to the end of each adjective  schneller, kleiner, moderner u.s.w. for almost every 1-syllable adjective, add an umlaut to the first vowel  älter, größer, kürzer, jünger, länger u.s.w.

3 Superlatives A superlative is the term used to describe an adjective in its most extreme form: the fastest am schnellsten the oldest am ältesten the smallest am kleinsten the biggest am größten

4 Rules for superlatives:
add „-sten” to the end of each adjective  am schnellsten, am kleinsten, am billigsten u.s.w. however, if an adjective ends in: –s, –ß, –ss, –x, –z, –sch, –d, –t ; add „-esten”  am intelligentesten, am ältesten, am kältesten u.s.w. Note: groß is an exception  größer, am größten

6 Some more irregular forms of comparisons & superlatives:
(add these to your list from before!) like gern  lieber am liebsten many viel mehr am meisten near nah näher am nächsten expensive teuer teurer am teuersten dark dunkel dunkler am dunkelsten

7  use the word „als” for „ than”
Comparing things:  use the word „als” for „ than” Frank ist größer als James. Karl ist doofer als Steffi. Berlin ist kälter als Hamburg. Bonn ist wärmer als Wien. Now, in your books write 5 – 10 sentences comparing people or things. Be creative!
