ppt 717 Experience: BASF Verbund Site Ludwigshafen BASF site fully integrated with community Vertical and horizontal integration of production plants, energy and waste flows, logistics and site infrastructure Savings of 2.6 million tons oil equivalent p.a. Reduction of CO2 emissions of ~6 million tons p.a. Our most important basis for this model is the largest integrated chemical production site in the world, right here in Ludwigshafen. As you can see, this site has been operating for more than a century and is fully integrated into the local community, with residences, businesses, and commercial areas directly adjacent to the site. At the same time we are also located upstream right along the Rhine River, which is the “mother river” of Europe just as the Yangtze River is in China. Over the years we have continuously improved the efficiency and reduced the emissions of this site. For example, we say that the water coming out of the site is cleaner than the water going in! And by co-locating the plants in a highly streamlined and integrated way, we can save both a substantial amount of energy as well the associated emissions of greenhouse gases. In German we call this system “Verbund”. We take the best practices of the Ludwigshafen site to our sites all around the world, including our sites in China.
