3 Thema 1: Ein Familienstammbaum
Look over the Neue Wörter on Seite 85. Study the Familienstammbaum on Seite 84. You must know all vocabulary associated with family titles (r, Vater, e, Schwester).

4 Sprachtipp To indicate that somebody is related to another person, add an –s to the person’s name (minus the apostrophe). Das ist Bernd Thalhofers Familie. Bernds Eltern heißen Werner und Helene. Another way to indicate relationships is with the preposition von. Das ist die Familie von Bernd Thalhofer. The von construction is preferred if a name ends in –s or –z. Die Frau von Markus heißt Julia.

5 Sprachtipp To indicate that someone is related only through one parent, compounds can be forme using Stief- (step) and Halb- (half). The German equivalent to English great is the prefix Ur-. Maria ist meine Schtiefschwester. Mein Halbbruder heißt Jens. Wilhelmine ist meine Urgroßmutter.

Become familiar with the German words for the days of the week and the months of the year. All terms can be found on Seite 88.

8 Sprachtipp Use the following phrases to say the day or month when something takes place. Wann wirst du 21? Ich werde am Samstag 21. Wann hast du Geburtstag? Ich habe im Dezember Geburtstag.

11 Sprachtipp Ordinal Numbers are formed by adding the suffixes –te or –ste to the cardinal number. First, third, seventh and eighth are exceptions. (See chart on next slide) Ordinal numbers are normally used with the definite article. Freitag ist der erste Oktober. To talk about special occasions, use: Wann hast du Geburtstag? – Am 18. (achtzehnten) September. Ordinal numbers are written with a period: der 4. Juli; am 4. Juli
