3 Comparatives/Superlatives Know the basic rules: Comparative: add –er to the plain form Superlative: “am” + -sten schön – schooner – am schönsten Special cases: one syllable adjectives whose vowel is a, o, or u Add an umlaut in both comparative and superlative forms lang – länger – am längsten

4 Comparatives/Superlatives Special case: Adjectives ending in t, d, s, ß, z : Add an “e” in the superlative form kurz –kürzer – am kürzesten Irregular Forms to Know: gut – besser – am besten viel – mehr – am meisten gern – lieber – am liebsten
