Modal Verbs Modal verbs are not action verbs! Modal verbs show the mood or condition of the action verb.

These are the could have, would have, should have verbs. I am going home. I should go home. I must go home. I want to go home. I’m allowed to go home. I can go home. I would like to go home.

There are 6 modal verbs in German: können – to be able to (can) mögen – to like to (möchten – would like to) wollen – to want to sollen – to supposed to (should) dürfen – to be allowed to (may) müssen – to have to (must)

mögen müssen wollen ich mag muss will du magst musst willst er,sie,es wir ihr mögt müsst wollt sie Sie These verbs are IRREGULAR in how they are conjugated, but they all follow a similar pattern. What do you observe?

In the sentence the modal verb is conjugated and the action verb is in the infinitive form in the last position. Ich gehe nach Hause. Ich will nach Hause gehen. Ich muss nach Hause gehen. Ich mag nach Hause gehen.

He wants to go home. Er will nach Hause gehen. They have to go home. Sie müssen nach Hause gehen. We do not like to go home. Wir mögen nicht nach Hause gehen.

There are 2 non-modal verbs that follow a similar conjugation pattern. werden – to become ich werde, du wirst, er wird wissen – to know ich weiss, du weisst, er weiss

I am becoming sick. Ich werde krank. He is getting better. Er wird besser. They know that. Sie wissen das. She doesn’t know that. Sie weiss das nicht.

Future Tense To form the future tense in German you conjugate werden and put the action verb at the end in the infinitive form. He will go home. Er wird nach Hause gehen. (it functions just like the modal verbs.)

Translate the following sentences: She will go on Thursday. Sie wird am Donnerstag gehen. I will certainly be there. Ich werde bestimmt da sein.
