The Dative Case

There is a third case in the German language. This is called the Dative Case. Nouns in the Dative Case are used as the indirect objects in a sentence. The indirect object receives the direct object. It is the recipient of the direct object. She gave her mother a bouquet. I sent my grandfather a letter.

When nouns are used in the Dative Case, the definite and indefinite articles change their spelling. Sometimes even the nouns themselves change spelling.
