You will have one hour to formally write up your work under exam conditions and this will be submitted to the exam board for marking.

Lernziel: Write sentences using boot words to improve your grade Dienstag, den 26. November Lernergebnisse: All – are able to understand the different boot words Most – are able to change the word order with boot words with support Some – are able to write sentences independently using boot words EINSTIEG: Which of these connectives are boot words? weil und denn dass aber während

In a sentence the verb is usually the second word/idea e.g. Ich spiele TennisAm Freitag gehe ich ins Kino (I play tennis) (on Friday I go to the cinema) There are occasions when the verb goes to the end of the sentence. This happens when you begin with a type of word called a conjunction/boot word. One conjunction you will have used before is weil (because).

Here are the main ones: als – when (Past tense only)ob - whether bevor – beforeobwohl - although bis – untilsobald – as soon as da – as, sinceso lange – as long as damit – so thatwährend - while dass - thatwenn – if/whenever falls – in caseweil – because nachdem - after

examples: Ich wohne gern in Enfield, obwohl die Stadt klein ist. (I like living in Enfield although the town is small) Boot word Verb Ich habe meine Freundin gesehen, bevor ich nach Hause gekommen bin. (I saw my girlfriend before I came home) Boot word Verb Note: You put a comma before the conjunction

When you link sentences with a boot word, follow these simple rules: First keep the first half of the sentence the same Then put a COMMA instead of a full stop Add the BOOT WORD Identify the VERB in the second sentence and move it to the end Ich bin mit dem Zug gefahren. Ich mag Züge. (weil) (I travelled by train. I like trains.) (because) Ich bin mit dem Zug gefahren Ich bin mit dem Zug gefahren, Ich bin mit dem Zug gefahren, weil VERB HERE IS MAG Ich bin mit dem Zug gefahren, weil ich Züge mag.

Change these sentences by adding the boot word: 1.Ich bin nach Spanien geflogen. Es war schneller. (da) 2. Ich habe Chips gegessen. Ich war im Flugzeug. (während) 3.Ich bin schwimmen gegangen. Ich bin ins Restaurant gegangen. (bevor) 4.Meine Eltern denken. Italien ist ein schönes Land. (dass) 5.Ich werde nach Amerika fahren. Ich habe das Geld. (wenn) Ich bin nach Spanien geflogen, da es schneller war. Ich habe Chips gegessen, während ich im Flugzeug war. Ich bin schwimmen gegangen, bevor ich ins Restaurant gegangen bin. Meine Eltern denken, dass Italien ein schönes Land ist. Ich werde nach Amerika fahren, wenn ich das Geld habe.

Now rearrange these words in the same way to form sentences that make sense: 1.I Stayed with by uncle when I was in Ghana bei meinem Onken – ich – als – ich habe – gewohnt – war – in Ghana Ich habe bei meinem Onkel gewohnt, als ich in Ghana war. 2.I found the museum interesting, although it was very big das Museum – obwohl – interessant – ich fand – war – es – sehr groß Ich fand das Museum interessant, obwohl es sehr groß war. 3.I read my book, whenever the weather was bad schlecht – ich habe – wenn – war – das Wetter – mein Buch – gelesen Ich habe mein Buch gelesen, wenn das Wetter schlecht war. 4.We swam until it was dark geschwommen – dunkel – wir – bis – sind – es – war Wir sind geschwommen, bis es dunkel war
