Generic Time Phrases When you want to say on a day of the week, use „am“ plus the day of the week. Am Montag – on Monday Am Freitag – on Friday „Am“ plus a time of the day means at that time. Am Abend – in the evening Am Nachmittag – in the afternoon Am Wochenende – on the weekend

Die Zeit (basics) When telling time in German it is simply the hour + the word Uhr + the minutes. Every time phrase will start with “Es ist”. Examples: 2:00 – Es ist zwei Uhr. 2:13 – Es ist zwei Uhr dreizehn. 5:42 – Es ist fünf Uhr zweiundvierzig. Try these times: 6:19 – 4:15 – 12:54 – Es ist sechs Uhr neunzehn. Es ist vier Uhr fünfzehn. Es ist zwölf Uhr vierundfünfzig.

Die Zeit (A.M. vs. P.M.) Germany uses a 24 hour clock. That is how they differentiate between A.M. and P.M. Examples 1:15 A.M. – Es ist ein Uhr fünfzehn 1:15 P.M. – Es ist dreizehn Uhr fünfzehn 2:04 A.M. – Es ist zwei Uhr vier. 2:04 P.M. – Es ist vierzehn Uhr vier. Die Zeit (halves) When saying times with „:30“ in them it refers to the hour after.The phrase starts with „Es ist halb“ and then the hour.
