The Past Tense (Part 2) IRREGULAR VERBS

So far we have only learnt about REGULAR verbs, which follow the ge-t pattern to make their Past Participles.

There are of course, loads of verbs with Irregular Past Partciples. There is no fixed rule to how to form them. The easiest thing to do is to learn the most common examples and practise using them.

gegessen getrunken getragen gegangen ate gesehen drank wore went saw Try to guess what these mean in English gegessen getrunken getragen gegangen gesehen ate drank wore went saw

Usually these irregular past participles end in an ‘en’,but generally the the changes are pretty random. There are however a few patterns, which might help us.

Pattern 1: When a verb begins with be or ver, it does not add the ge- to the front. Ich habe ein Brief bekommen I received a letter Ich habe meine Oma besucht I visited my granny Ich habe meinen Kuli vergessen I forgot my pen Ich habe meine Tasche verloren I lost my bag

Pattern 2: When a verb ends in -ieren, it does not add the ge- to the front. e.g Ich habe das Auto repariert I repaired the car Ich habe an der Uni studiert I studied at university

Pattern 3: When a verb is Seperable, the ge-ends up in the MIDDLE of the Past Participle. e.g Ich habe gestern ferngesehen I watched TV yesterday Ich habe meine Mutter angerufen I phoned my mum.

Some Examples.

Ich habe einen Apfel gegessen Ich habe einen Film gesehen Ich habe ferngesehen Ich habe gelesen Ich habe einen Apfel gegessen Ich habe einen Film gesehen

ich habe ein Eis gegessen. (I ate an ice cream)

er hat in der Sonne gelegen (he laid in the sun)

wir haben Freunde getroffen (we met friends)

du hast ein Brief geschrieben (you wrote a letter)

er hat ferngesehen (he watched TV)

sie hat Kaffee getrunken (she drank coffee)

ich habe mit meinen Freunden gesprochen (I spoke with my friends)
