Negating German Sentences Nicht oder Kein?

Some simple rules: Kein (not a, not any, no) is the negative of ein. It negates nouns preceded by ein or nouns not preceded by any article.

Hat er eine Freundin?

Nein, er hat keine Freundin!

Kein is an ein-word and takes the same endings as ein and the possessive adjectives.

Haben Sie Freunde in Florida?

Nein, ich habe keine Freunde in Florida! Aber… Kein negates a noun without an article.

Ich habe Freunde auf Hawaii!

Ist das der Professor?

Nein, das ist nicht der Professor. Nicht (not) The noun is preceded by a def. article – so it can’t take kein. Nicht also comes before a predicate nominative.
