KMII 3-1 Past Tense

The conversational past tense is also known as PRESENT PERFECT.

Present Perfect The present perfect tense consists of the present tense forms of the verbs “haben” or “sein” and a form of the verb called the past participle. Beispiel: Ich habe Brot gekauft. Er ist ins Kino gegangen.

Present Perfect Most past participles start with “ge” Beispeile: gekommen (kommen) gespielt (spielen) gehabt (haben) gewohnt (wohnen)

Present Perfect There are two kinds of past participles: Regular or weak verbs ending in “t” gewohnt gespeilt besucht Irregular or strong verbs ending in “en” gegessen gelesen geblieben

Present Perfect How to form the past participle: Past participles ending in “-ieren” do not start with “ge-” fotografieren  fotografiert passieren  passiert

Present Perfect How to form the past participle: For separable prefix verbs, the “ge” goes in the middle of the verb where it separates. mitkommen  mitgekommen anrufen  angerufen

Present Perfect Verbs with prefixes which do not separate have no “ge” besuchen  besucht

Present Perfect Most verbs use “haben” for past tense. Verbs using “sein” usually show motion from one place to another or a change in condition

Beispiele: I mowed the lawn. Ich habe den Rasen gemäht. He drank the milk. Er hat die Milch getrunken. We hiked in the Alps. Wir sind in den Alpen gewandert.
