Kasus ● What is a case? A case shows the grammatical function of a word. ● There are four cases in German. Up to now you have been acquainted with three: Nominative, Accustaive and Dative. ● When is each case used?

Nominativ ● When is the Nominative used? ● The subject is in the nominative case. Die Familie wohnt hier. Der Mann kommt später. ● There are NO nominative prepositions.

Akkusativ ● When is the accusative case used? ● The direct object is in the accusative. Ich kaufe ein Buch. Sie haben einen Bleistift. ● There are a few prepositions that always use the accusative case. bis – ohne – gegen – um – fuer – durch

Dativ ● When is the Dative used? ● The indirect object is in the dative case. Er gibt das der Frau. Sie kaufen mir ein Geschenk. ● There are Dative Verbs that use the Dative case for their object. Genitiv ● The Genitive case is shown not only through the articles. For some nouns, Genitive endings have to be added. Zum Beispiel... ● Das Buch des Mannes liegt auf dem Tisch. ● Das Buch des Mädchens liegt daneben.

Endungen ● Masculine and neuter singular nouns take an –s or –es ending when used in the genitive. ● Feminine and plural nouns NEVER get these endings!

-es Endung ● The –es ending is used when... ● The noun is monosyllabic (i.e. one syllable). ● des Bildes des Hundesdes Mannes

-es Endung ● The –es ending is used when... ● the noun ends in an “s” sound (–s, -ß, -x or –z) ● des Hauses des Reflexes des Netzes

-s Endung ● The –s ending is used when... ● the noun is more than one syllable ● des Kalenders des Anzugs des Salats

-s Endung ● The –s ending is used when... ● the noun ends in a vowel OR a vowel followed by –h. ● des Autos des Sees ● des Schuhs des Flohs

Namen im Genitiv ● Das ist Jessicas Buch. ● An –s is added to the end of the name. There is NO apostrophe. ● Das ist Matthias’ Freund. ● If the name already ends in an –s, an apostrophe is added. You DO NOT add an extra –s.
