Most of today’s server install base are purely 32-bit With the x64 release of different OS, customers will start combining 32-bit and 64-bit applications on the same system Over time, customers will increasingly use pure 64-bit stacks based on x64 and Itanium Net result is a smooth transition path to 64-bit computing 32-bit Applications 32-bit 32-bit x64 Itanium x64 OS 32-bit 32-bit x64 x64 Itanium Device Drivers 32-bit 32-bit x64 x64 Itanium Server Hardware 32-bit x64 x64 x64 Itanium 2005 2010 Pure 32-bit Stack Pure 64-bit Stack FSC_Exchange_64bit_BB_V1.ppt :38: Bernhard Brandwitte © Fujitsu Siemens Computers All rights reserved © Fujitsu Siemens Computers All rights reserved

11 Processor Evolution: Market preview on IA 32, X-64 and IPF
Mainstream x86-32 Flexibel x86-64 Migration in specific application areas Itanium 2004 Best platform for the majority of cases IA32 is the largest ecosystem of applications and solutions partners Preferred platform for resource-intensive, scalable applications, leading price/performance for Highend systems Will eventually evolve as alternative to UNIX/ RISC platforms 2005 Most flexible platform, since efficiently supports! BOTH 32 & 64 Bit applications Based on the facts we worked out in the previous slides, this is the general positioning of the different processor technologies currently and in the future. x86-32 (any PRIMERGY Server running with a 32-Bit OS) is the mainstream platform today for Intel based standard high volume server. In the future this platform will host mainly legacy applications, which are not be migrated to x64 environment x64 (up from PRIMERGY S2 running a 64-Bit capable OS (not Itanium)) will be the most versatile platform. It can run 32-Bit applications as well as native 64-Bit applications Itanium will be the leading platform for High-end Servers in the future (our new PRIMEQUEST IA64 Servers are based on this technology). Not at least the extended RAS architecture of this processor is the main argument to use it in this market segment Legacy x86-32 Mainstream x86-64 Enterprise Highend Plattform Itanium 2005/ 2007 FSC_Exchange_64bit_BB_V1.ppt :38: Bernhard Brandwitte © Fujitsu Siemens Computers All rights reserved © Fujitsu Siemens Computers All rights reserved

12 IPF - Itanium 2 - Comparison
Processor- Hardware Original- Quell- code Compiler Sequential code Implizit parallel . traditional IA32- Architecture Original- Quell- code EPIC Compiler Efficient Resource utilization Parallel code Itanium™- Architectur . Massive Resources This simplified diagramm shows, what important role an „EPIC“ compiler plays in the new Itanium Architecture design. Rather than producing sequential instruction code, that is passed to the processor and relies an optimization by processor internal functionalities ( as is the case with IA 32 processors), the EPIC COMPILER generates the parallel machine code . This is then processed by the Intanium 2 processor ,without additional work for paralellization by the CPU. Using its multiple instruction units and more than 300 internal registers, the ITANIUM 2 provides outstanding performance for such „epic-compiled“ appliactions. Itanium provides a native ia 32 bit compatibility unit on chip, yet the operating system needs to support the IA 32 Bit backwards compatibility by providing the necessary 32 bit libraries either explicity or by inclusion with its 64 bit libraries. Please note that for HP UX (RISC) there is no native RISC Compatibility inside the Itanium2; instead HP-UX 11i – the Itanium version of the HP UX RISC OS provides a dynamic code-translator „ARIES“ with the UX 11iv2 operating system, that runtime translates RISC binaries into the Itanium EPIC code to provide backwards compatibility with PA-RISC HP UX applications ! PLease also note that Itanium 2 based servers of the 4way, 8 way and 64 way class have recently demonstrated world record performnaqce for TPC-C OLTP benchmarks as well as some SAP benchmarks, which until now have been the sole domain of RISC based servers such as PRIMEPOWER. Bottom line: exploiting the full performance potential of Itanium 2 based servers requires - a well designed Compiler for EPIC code generation a genuine 64 Bit operating System an „EPIC -compiled“ version of the application suite. High-End Performance through 64 Bit Applications (EPIC-optimized and compiled) highest reliability through hardware und eco system design Application focus on: Database; Business intelligence; Supply Chain Management 32bit Applications run in completely emulated environment FSC_Exchange_64bit_BB_V1.ppt :38: Bernhard Brandwitte © Fujitsu Siemens Computers All rights reserved © Fujitsu Siemens Computers All rights reserved

31 Inspiration is the SAN - Processing Area Network (PAN) virtualizes Processors and Memory
pServer to Physical CPU/Memory Mapping in PAN So the concept of the PAN architecture is to places “pure” processor and memory capacity on high speed, switched fabric It moves all points of state and identity of a server to switch layer, so it implements physical components in software This provides an outstanding flexible IT infrastructure and so Processing Area Networks (PAN) enable utility computing It is allowed to say, What SAN is for disks, PAN Manager is for Processors and Memory LUN to Physical Drive Mapping in SAN FSC_Exchange_64bit_BB_V1.ppt :38: Bernhard Brandwitte © Fujitsu Siemens Computers All rights reserved © Fujitsu Siemens Computers All rights reserved

Was muss ich mir darunter vorstellen?
