Past Tense  In English and German, several different verb constructions are used to indicate that an action took place in the past. The simple past is called “simple” because it consists of only one word. The “perfect” tenses shown all include a form of have or haben plus a verb called the past participle that expresses the action. 10 Auf Englisch  A past participle is a verb that expresses the action in perfect tenses.  Every verb has its own past participle form.  The past participle is always used with a conjugated form of have(the past participle form itself cannot be conjugated).

Present Perfect We have worked in the garden. (past participle: worked) Basti has gone to this grandparents’ house. (past participle: gone)  Past participles can be regular or irregular.  A regular past participle is formed using a predictable pattern: you will always add –ed or –d to the plain verb. (walk) I have walked(live) I have lived (visit) I have visited(help) I have helped (hike) I have hiked(learn) I have learned  An irregular past participle does not follow the pattern. The most common way to form irregular past participles is with a vowel change. Some past participles look just like the infinitive. You need to memorize the irregular past participle forms. (bring) I have brought(find) I have found (speak) I have spoken(eat) I have eaten (sing) I have sung(stand) I have stood

 Vollständige Aktivität A auf s. 71 (allein)  5 Minuten  Mit ein Partner überprüfe deine Arbeit  2 Minuten

Auf Deutsch  In German as in English verbs are classified as regular or irregular.  Verbs that have a regular past participle are referred to as “weak verbs.” The past participles of weak verbs always end in –t. They also have the prefix ge-. InfinitiveVerb StemPast Participles spielenspielgespielt machenmachgemacht

 Verbs that have irregular past participle forms are called “strong verbs.” As with English irregular verbs, they often have a vowel change or other spelling change. The past participles of strong verbs begin with ge- and always end in –en or –n. InfinitiveVerb StemPast Participle laufenlauf-gelaufen findenfind-gefunden gehengeh-gegangen

Note the following:  Verbs that already have an inseparable prefix do NOT add the prefix ge-. besuchenbesuchtgefallen  Verbs whose infinitive ends in –ieren also do NOT add the prefix ge-. fotografierenfotografiert  Verbs with separable prefixes have the prefix ge- between the separable prefix and the verb. aussehenausgesehen mitkommenmitgekommen Note: there is no way of predicting the form of the past participle of a strong verb in German. You have to memorize the form of the past participle

Auf Englisch  The present perfect is a tense that refers to past time.  It is made up of two verb forms: a conjugated form of to have, and a past participle.  I have walked to school every day this week.  It has not rained in weeks.  We have not taken the bus to school this semester.

 Vollständige Aktivität A auf s. 73 (allein)  2 Miniten  Mit ein Partner überprüfe deine Arbeit  1 Minute

Auf Deutsch  As in English, the present perfect tense consists of a helping verb and the past participle. Most of the time the helping verb is a conjugated form of haben. However, some of past participles use a conjugated form of sein. Was habt ihr gestern gemacht? Wir haben am Abend Tennis gespielt. Ich bin gestern Abend ins Kino gegangen. Notice that the past participle is placed at the end of each sentence, while the helping verb is in the normal verb position.

 The helping verb haben is used with all transitive verbs (verbs that can have a direct object), and intransitive verbs (verbs that don’t take a direct object) that express a condition or an event in its duration. Ich habe die Berge fotografiert. (die Berge: direct object) Wir haben einmal in Berlin gewohnt. (an event that lasted awhile)  The helping verb sein is used with verbs that indicate a change of place or condition. Wir sind in die Stadt gefahren. (We went from one place to another.) Ich bin um 11 Uhr eingeschlafen. (You were awake and then went to sleep)

Use of the Present PerfectTense  In both English and German, the past tense is structurally similar; however, the usage of the various past-tense forms differs between the languages. Wir sind ins Kino gegangen. We went to the movies. Was habt ihr gesehen? What did you see? Wir haben “Gladiator” gesehen. We saw Gladiator. Wie hat dir der Film gefallen? How did you like the movie? Der Film hat mir sehr gut gefallen.I liked the movie very much.  To express past time, you can always use the present perfect. The present perfect tense is used to refer to past time, especially in conversation, and is virtually the only tense used to express past time. Note: There is a simple past in German, like did, saw, went. This simple past is used more in narration.
