SANmelody Category B also has optional Fibre Channel network support for high bandwidth storage area networking (SAN). It also offers the optional Snapshot feature, which provides point-in-time copies of volumes used in backups, testing and other applications. Snapshot LAN Backup Servers Application Servers Disk Snapshots Take Place of Daily Backups Disk Servers can be configured to periodically generate daily 'snapshots,' or point-in-time copies, of critical volumes on separate disks -- eliminating the need for daily tape backups. The snapshots may be mounted just like a removable drive to rapidly restore an application to a known good image from the previous day. Where conventional tape backups can disrupt application processing for several hours, an online snapshot only requires a brief application pause to record the current state of the data. Immediately after a snapshot is taken, the 'live' source volume is released and applications may resume updates. SANmelody then captures subsequent changes to the data in real-time on a separate volume. This process dramatically reduces the time to create a "backup copy." “Auto Provisioning” Servers ‘think’ they have all the storage they want… Very large virtual disk assigned to each server Small fraction of real capacity allocated to each virtual disk SANmelody automatically allocates additional space when used SANmelody Category D adds even more capacity, performance capabilities, high availability and data protection features. The ability to automatically provision storage capacity is a unique feature of SANmelody that will save time, simplify administration and reduce wasted capacity. Finally, we get rid of the guessing. Instead, SANmelody elegantly auto-provisions just enough space, just-in-time to needy servers. It does so in real time by assigning very large “virtual disk images” to each server. By large, we mean the largest addressable disk an operating system can handle (often 2 terabytes). In much the same way that virtual memory operates, all of the servers think they have plenty of room. Physically, however, only a fraction of real space is assigned to the pool. The amount on day one is dictated by current actual requirements plus a reserve for near term growth. Those applications that consume additional capacity as time goes on, deplete the free space, many never reaching anywhere close to their 2 terabyte virtual allotment. SANmelody doles out additional real space in granular increments, say 128 MB and monitors for use before granting more. Over time, as the free space for the entire pool is chewed up, the low reserve mark is reached, triggering a notification. 20% reserve is common. Upon this alert, additional disks are acquired and added non-intrusive to the pool, upping the free space to a comfortable level once again. Each server’s disk space is mechanically isolated from the others. In this diagram the center most server has exhausted its disk space, while adjacent servers have much surplus. Yet there is no simple way to reallocate the spare capacity. Often applications have to be shut down so additional disks can be installed. That means scheduling a maintenance window, ordering more disks and having the hardware team come in to rewire.
