Wiederholen What is a stem-changing verb? A stem-changing verb has a spelling change in its stem when you conjugate it. This spelling change only occurs in the du and er/sie/es forms. What is the stem of a verb? You find the stem by dropping –en. werdengehenmachen

Types of Stem-Changes There are different types of stem changes. There are three types of stem-changing verbs: a > ä e > i e > ie

a > ä For these types of stem changing verbs, the a in the stem changes to an a with an umlaut. Here are some common verbs with this type of stem change.

a > ä fahren laufen schlafen tragen to drive, ride to walk, run to sleep to carry

a > ä Let’s practice conjugating one of these stem-changing. Fill in your chart with the conjugation of fahren. Remember, that the a gets an umlaut in the du and er/sie/es forms.
