3 There are present tense forms in English:
I play ich spiele I am playing ich spiele I do play ich spiele Remember that verbs must match their subject in German and change ending accordingly. Many German verbs follow a similar pattern in the present tense to do this. These verbs are called weak (regular) verbs.

How to make the verb match the subject (person or thing doing the action) in the present tense. For the present tense of weak (regular) verbs, you take off the -en/n of the infinitive (full verb) and add these endings to the “stem” to match the persons: + ich spiele du spielst er/sie/es spielt wir spielen ihr spielt Sie spielen sie spielen spielen spiel Make notes and try to learn this pattern.

How to make the verb match the subject (person or thing doing the action) in the present tense. For the present tense of strong (irregular) verbs, you take off the -en/n of the infinitive (full verb) and add the same endings to the “stem” to match the persons as for weak verbs. However, there may be a sound change in the du (second person singular) and er/sie/es (third person singular) forms. + fahren fahr ich fahre du fährst er/sie/es fährt wir fahren ihr fahrt Sie fahren sie fahren Make notes and try to learn these patterns.

You need to learn the verbs on this list in all their different tenses. This is vital for all aspects of your A level study.

These are called “auxiliary verbs”. Do you know which they are? Which tenses are they used for? haben (to have) sein (to be) werden (to become)
