3 Nouns in German are special O They are always written with a capital letter O There are 3 groups of nouns, so each noun belongs to a group

4 Groups O Each group has its own word for the O der O die O das

5 Question O How do we know which group a noun belongs to?

6 Answer O When you learn a new word, learn the word for the that goes with it, then you will never go wrong

7 Der words O These words are in blue O all male people e.g. der Vater O All seasons e.g. der Sommer O All the days e.g. der Montag O All the months e.g. der Februar O Lots of other words e.g. der Kuli

8 Die words O These words are in red O All female people (except the girl) e.g die Mutter O Usually words ending in –e e.g. die Schule O Words ending in –in e.g. die Lehrerin O Lots of other words e.g die Fahne

10 Kasus - Case In German there are four cases: O Nominativ O Akkusativ O Dativ O Genitiv

11 Kasus The doer of the action is in the nominative case Example: Ein iPod ist teuer – An iPod is expensive The iPod is doing the action Therefore the iPod is the doer and is in the nominative case

12 Kasus The receiver of the action (verb) is in the accusative case Example: Ich kaufe einen iPod – I buy an iPod I am doing the verb – I is in the nominative Case The iPod is receiving the action. Therefore, an iPod is in the accusative case
