Talk about what people did in their freetime using the conversational past tense using war and hatte. Talk about what people did using conversational past of irregular verbs. At the end of this unit, you will do an online practice quiz.

4 Conversational past (Ich habe Golf gespielt, er hat nichts gemacht
Conversational past (Ich habe Golf gespielt, er hat nichts gemacht.) is used for relating events that have already happened. As its name implies, it is generally used in speaking—for conversation. Another form of the past tense is the simple past, also called the imperfect. A few verbs use this form for conversation. The two most common are sein (to be) and haben (to have). Here are some examples: Ich hatte Kopfschmerzen. (I had a headache.) Ich hatte kein Geld. (I had no money.) Ich war nicht hier. (I wasn’t here.) Ich war im Kino. (I was in the theaters.)

The simple past of haben is shown below. ich hatte (I had) wir hatten (we had) du hattest (you had) ihr hattet (you’all had) er sie hatte (he/she/it had) es sie hatten (they had) Sie hatten (you had, polite) Notice the endings. Er, sie and es take an –e (hatte), not a –t as in the present tense (Er hat ein Auto versus Er hatte ein Auto).

The simple past of sein is shown below. ich war (I had) wir waren (we had) du warst (you had) ihr wart (you’all had) er sie war (he/she/it had) es sie waren (they had) Sie waren (you had, polite) Again, notice the endings. Ich does not take an ending Er, sie and es do not take an ending. Notice that in simple past, er, sie and es match ich (ich hatte, ich war; er hatte, er war).
