Where can I receive information Useful links, tips etc.

2 Moving to the new city or with in city
Get registered in registration office in the new city (Einwohnermeldeamt) Open new bank account if necessary (Ask for “Umzugsservice” in your new bank) Inform your bank, health insurance company and your cell phone provider your new adresse The Post Office offers ‚Nachsendeservice‘. Your post can be forwarded to your new addressfor a fee of € for 6 months and € for 12 months.

3 Moving into the new room
When you move into an apartment or room, you must usually pay the electricity and water yourself, as they are not included in the rent (Kaltmiete). Inform the appropriate provider, e.g. the local waterworks (Wasserversorger, Stadtwerke, e.g. ) in your area that you are the new tenant in your flat or room. (In case of Kaltmiete). (If you live in a W.G. the arrangements could be different and you may only have to share the general costs). Register with the G.E.Z. in Germany so that you can legally use your TV, computer and radio. If you do not register with the G.E.Z. and are caught using your television etc. without having registered you will have to pay a fine. Ask for help from landlord if you have any problems

11 Important things for rent a room
Unlimited Contract Inform the landlord by writing a letter with your signature three months ahead of time (2 months in case of student dorm). cancellation period (Kündigungsfrist) is usually 3 months – even if it is not written in your contract. Better to send a registered letter (Einschreiben). You will have written proof that the landlord got the letter. Read your contract for the cancelling restrictions. For example: some contracts only let you cancel at the end of the month. Limited rent contract cannot cancel this contract before the end of the rental period! Please be very careful before signing limited contracts! Some landlords might accept a 1 month cancellation period if you find next tenant (Nachmieter).

12 Limited Time Contracts
But – be careful: If you have a limited rent contract, for example for one year, you often cannot cancel this contract before the end of the rental period! Please be very careful before signing limited contracts! Do not sign a limited long term contract as it does not allow you to move out before a certain period of time (which could be 3 years!).

13 Cancellation Period for Unlimited Contracts
You cannot move out from one day to the next. You must give written notice! If you have an unlimited contract, you have to tell the landlord that you want to move out three months ahead of time (2 months if you live in a student dorm). By German rental law this cancellation period (Kündigungsfrist) is usually 3 months – even if it is not written in your contract. You have to cancel your contract by writing a letter, not with phone call. These letters are only valid with your signature. We recommend cancelling your room with a registered letter (Einschreiben) that you send from the post office. You will then have written proof that the landlord got the letter. Read your contract for the cancelling restrictions. For example: some contracts only let you cancel at the end of the month. If you don’t cancel your contract correctly, you might have to pay rent on 2 rooms at the same time.

14 Subletting (Untermieter)
Important things for rent a room Subletting (Untermieter) In order to sub-let your room you must get written permission from the landlord. If you live in a student dorm, you have to get WRITTEN PERMISSION from the - Studentenwerk - people in the house - International Office - student dorm commission - building manager (Herr Schlechtriem). If you do not follow this rule, neither of you will ever get a room in the student dorms again.
