If the CMM is removed from the system or is otherwise unavailable, the system fans will automatically change to full speed. The cooling subsystem is designed to provide sufficient cooling to a fully loaded system with a single failed cooling module; a failed cooling module or power supply should be replaced as soon as is practically possible. The server compute modules do not contain physical storage; the storage controller provides storage resources to the servers through a high-speed SAS bus, mapping one or more LUNs to each server. Configuration of storage and allocation of storage resources to the server compute modules is managed through a web-based management and configuration tool embedded in the Intel® Management Module. The storage control module provides RAID functionality and hot spare failover support; an optional battery backup unit may be installed to provide additional data security in case of an unplanned power loss; the battery unit will maintain data in cache alive for approximately 72 hours. The management module operates as a service processor and a remote keyboard/video/mouse (KVM) switch for the multiple server compute modules installed in the chassis. It communicates with the switch modules, power modules, blower modules, and server compute modules in the chassis to monitor their health and any error conditions, sending alerts when appropriate.
